Wine and Chocolate – good for the heart?

Studies have shown that people who drink moderate of alcohol have little chance of getting the risk of heart disease than non drinkers plus drinking red wine offer health benefits too. It contains a compound flavonoids and resveratrol which helps to limit atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

Drinking alcohol –red wine included- one to two drinks per day increases good HDL cholesterol* by about 12%. Moderate drinking of alcohol may also reduce the risk of blood clots. The American Heart Association urges moderation in alcohol consumption no more than two drinks per day for men and one for women. If you’re not a fan of alcohol or red wine it’s good to start now, drinking is a preventive measure if you have no other options.

Dark chocolate and cocoa are rich in flavonoids (antioxidant). Research suggests that eating flavonoid-rich chocolate keep the blood vessels healthier by improving its ability to expand. Eating high-flavonoid dark chocolate daily helps high blood pressure patients lower their blood pressure. Keep in mind that eating chocolate in moderation is fine and be aware that various chocolate products also differ in terms of flavonoid levels so it’s not a guarantee you’ll get the right amount of health benefits you need. On the other hand, eating too much chocolate is not good for a heart-healthy diet since the extra calories can lead to weight gain.
* HDL cholesterol - the cholesterol in high-density lipoproteins; the 'good' cholesterol; a high level in the blood is thought to lower the risk of coronary artery disease.
